Islamic Baby Names

Naming a child in the Islamic faith is exceedingly important, inspired from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad of Allah. Parents are exhorted to give a child a name that is both beautiful and good, and those given names with bad connotations are encouraged to change them.

Names with a focus on serving Allah or with a focus on faith are especially encouraged. Abdullah, meaning servant of God, and Amin, meaning faithful and trustworthy, are two excellent examples of this. Females named Fatimah, or daughter of the prophet, and Iman, or faith or belief, are given auspicious beginnings in the eyes of this faith. Other names of good meaning for boys are Khalil, which means good friend; Saleh, which means good or right and Suhail, meaning gentle or easy. For girls Hanan means mercy, while Jamilah stands for beauty, grace and loveliness. There is also Nuha, which means intelligence.

These are just a few examples of names for children of parents who practice the Islamic faith. A great amount of importance is placed on the knowledge of the meaning of each name given to a child in this faith. The gift of a child from Allah comes with the responsibility for providing that child with a good start, beginning with the name.
